Direct to Film (DTF)
What is Direct to Film (DTF) Printing?
Direct to Film (DTF) printing is a cutting-edge digital printing method used to transfer designs from a digital file directly onto a specialized heat-transfer film. This process offers unique versatility in what can be printed, making it ideal for customizing various fabrics and garments. DTF printing is particularly valuable for intricate and multi-color designs, as it allows for a high level of detail and vibrant colors.
How Does Direct to Film (DTF) Printing Work?
DTF printing involves several key steps:
Step 1 - Design Creation:
The process begins with creating the design using digital design software such as CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator. The design can be anything from a simple logo to complex, detailed artwork. Because DTF uses full-color processes, there is virtually no limit to what you can design, print, and transfer.
Step 2 - Printing onto Heat-Transfer Film:
Once the design is ready, it is printed directly onto DTF films using specialized DTF printers. The ink used in this process is formulated to adhere to the film effectively. There are several reliable brands of DTF printers, including those from UNINET.
Step 3 - Preparing and baking your transfer:
To prepare your transfer, you'll need to apply adhesive to the printed film. This can be done manually by sprinkling the adhesive powder over your print and shaking off the excess powder or by using shaker.
Then you’ll need to bake your transfer using a heat press or heat station.
Step 4 - Heat Transfer:
The printed DTF film is then placed onto the prepared fabric, with the ink side facing down. Heat and pressure are applied using a heat press which causes the ink to transfer from the film to the fabric, resulting in a permanent bond.
Step 5 - Peeling and Curing:
After the heat transfer process is complete, the heat-transfer film is carefully peeled away, revealing the design on the fabric. The printed fabric is then cured to ensure the ink sets properly, making the design durable and washable.
