What do I need to start sublimation?
Sublimation requires a sublimation specific printer, sublimation inks, sublimation paper, a heat press, a computer, and a polyester-coated blank to personalize. These blanks may include anything from sublimation hats and sublimation tote bags to hard goods like hardboard and ceramic bowls. Generally, sublimation compatible items are light or white in color, have a polyester coating or a polyester-blend fabric, and can withstand heat and pressure. Other products to keep in your sublimation toolbox include blow-out paper to protect your heat press, heat gloves, and heat tape. What is sublimation hardboard?
Sublimation hardboard, also known as sublimation MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard), is a type of substrate used in the sublimation printing process. Sublimation printing is a digital printing technique that uses heat and pressure to transfer dye onto materials such as textiles, ceramics, and specially coated substrates. Sublimation hardboard is specifically designed to accept sublimation dyes, resulting in vibrant and durable prints.
Do I need specific paper for sublimation?
Yes, sublimation requires paper with a specific coating for the sublimation process to occur. This paper may be in cut sheet form or roll paper form, depending on the printer it will be used in. There are different sublimation papers for soft and hard substrates as well as hybrid sublimation paper, like our JPP sublimation papers!
Can I sublimate on acrylic?
Yes, it is possible to sublimate on acrylic, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind. Sublimating on acrylic involves transferring sublimation ink onto the surface of the acrylic substrate using heat and pressure, so some acrylics will not be a good fit for the process. When choosing a sublimation acrylic, be sure it is rated and tested to be utilized with sublimation technologies!
